St. Thomas’ Apartment converts the disused belfry of a Grade II listed church near London Bridge Station into a unique residential unit. Careful collaboration with Historic England has ensured that, alongside achieving statutory approval, the atmosphere of the belfry has been retained and enhanced. Access to the apartment is provided by a new lift, constructed adjacent to the belfry and clad in a sympathetic London stock brick. The height of the new addition references the parapet height of the Georgian house that once stood on the site. The lift also provides access to the Old Operating Theatre museum, one of London’s most visited attractions. Each floor of the five storey home is connected by the original wooden spiral staircase, with the exception of the top floor bathroom which is accessed from a new stair concealed behind the master bed.
