As the landmark to the entire 1.56 ha Barking Central scheme, the Lemonade Building signals the regeneration of the neighbourhood. The 17-storey building’s smooth brick elevations are punctured with recessed balconies that are grouped and coloured in homage to the signature stripes of R. White’s Lemonade (once manufactured on the site). The vertical lines of the balconies and windows – configured to break down the building’s perceived mass – emerge through the brickwork at the top of the tower to give a castellated roofline. Four commercial units define the ground floor, continuing Ripple Road’s retail terrace and activating the north-eastern edge of muf’s Arboretum. Above, 68 one-bedroom and 68 two-bedroom apartments, each with a large, sheltered balcony, are positioned around a centralised core.
