Hillside Lodge is a new family home built in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The triangular site slopes steeply from the wooded north boundary towards the south. An existing house in a state of disrepair was demolished before works began on the new building.

The client’s aspiration for the project was to create a five-bedroom family home with a modern appearance, crisp straight lines and sharp well detailed corners and junctions. The resulting building delivers a flexible and adaptable home positioned to the north of the original house, a location that better responds to the south facing slope and capitalises on the excellent views.

The design utilises a limited palette of materials commonly found in the local architecture, charred timber cladding and knapped flint were selected for the exterior of the house. These materials are tactile and natural whilst also allowing for a high-quality refined finish. Edge trims and window detailing has been achieved using pressed and extruded aluminium elements with an anodised finish. A series of extruded aluminium fins provides privacy and solar shading in the summer months.

The palette of materials is also expressed within the home with the knapped flint continuing into the double height entrance space. Throughout the home durable high quality surfaces have been selected that will maintain a quality throughout their lifecycle, teamed with a calm, muted colour palette.
