A collaboration with Ruff Architects, Church Road is the redesign and extension of a family home located in the Highgate conservation area and set amongst some of the only remaining ancient oaks outside of the Highgate Wood.

The key aims of the project were to make sense of the unusual internal layout and extend the property to create a beautiful and functional family home that can adapt to the users’ needs. The new layout has created suites of connected rooms, with zoned spaces for living, dining and home working. Each new zone has been designed to benefit from internal views through the home, creating a sense of intimate yet interconnected spaces.

It was important that the existing fabric of the building should be reused and upgraded wherever possible to reduce embodied carbon. The existing building was stripped back to the primary structure, before being extended to create a timber constructed, and naturally clad home that would also be energy efficient in use.

As a key consideration in the design of the project, the new garden enhances biodiversity, and draws on the two practices’ larger scale projects for urban greening strategies such as permeable paving, green roofs and flood protection.
