White Collar Factory (WCF) – a five-year research project for Derwent London in collaboration with Arup, Davis Langdon and AKT II – begins and ends with the design of generous volumes that maximise natural light and ventilation and minimise the use of materials and energy. The WCF Working Prototype, featuring big spans, operable windows, large volumes and robust construction, was a 325 square metre slice of an entire floor of WCF built in the sky to test and demonstrate its capabilities and qualities to the client and prospective occupiers. Standing on site on stilts for six months in 2013/14, it has now been dismantled to make way for the next iteration, soon to emerge at 16 storeys on the corner of Old Street and City Road.
