The redevelopment of 1 Victoria Street, the former headquarters of the Department for Business and Trade, will transform a significant 1960s office building into a sustainable, commercial building offering carefully designed office accommodation, with active retail on the ground floor along Victoria Street.
Located on an island site within central Westminster overlooking Westminster Abbey and its World Heritage Site setting, the proposals reinforce the buildings relationship with the surrounding streets whilst respecting the sensitive context of the site. The stepped massing creates external amenity for workplace users and features extensive planting.
The new building will be constructed above the retained basement structure, with over 50% of the existing structure retained minimising embodied carbon emissions while allowing the project to address the existing buildings shortfalls. The site will be transformed with several new interventions, including new low carbon structure, cores, and MEP services, a high-performance façade, enhanced public realm and streetscapes, and increased urban greening.
