Wheeler Block 13 is a three storey mixed use office and retail building in the Wheeler District of Oklahoma City.
The building’s barrel-shaped roof echoes the historic airport vernacular of the site, and its ‘dancing windows’ are a playful reinterpretation of the checkerboard airport flag. The distinct massing also lessens the apparent height of the building, while also creating a large flexible volume for the top floor office.
The carefully detailed metal roofing rolls down to become the façade, transforming a traditionally utilitarian material into something beautiful. A rusticated concrete plinth frames retail entrance portals and is both expressive and tactile.
The building provides 9,000 square feet of commercial space comprising coffee shop, restaurant and retail space at ground floor, with a further 18,000 square feet of office space on the second and third floors.
This modern warehouse-style building is designed for future flexibility and multiple uses.
