The Courtyard House in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, explores the idea of being hidden in plain sight. The exterior — a textured brick abstraction that nods to the prevailing vernacular style of this historic neighbourhood — conceals a light-filled interior. Spaces are distinguished in volume but flow together in the plan arranged as a ribbon of spaces which focus around a courtyard garden. This garden, with its stone finishes, echoes the interior and extends the spaces from within to without. The pool as fountain adds movement and noise to mediate between the open living and the private bedroom spaces. Each guest bedroom opens out on to a private external yard, while the master bedroom enjoys views out to a private garden.
