Commissioned to respond to the accommodation needs of Ravensbourne College of Design, Scape Greenwich offers 280 student rooms within the Greenwich Peninsula. The building champions offsite manufacture, using repetition to maximise both character and construction efficiency. Two nine-storey, vaulted-topped blocks sit above an open-plan podium whose street edges are configured to cater for exhibition opportunities. The building’s massing – split in two to enable light penetration – is stepped in plan to strengthen the curve of Chandlers Ave and open up to the green space of East Parkside across the road. Crisp, precast concrete panels with large, integrated windows define the elevations whilst expressing both the room modulation and a strong identity for the corner site. Inside, the student rooms are complemented by multi-functional space for social gathering on the ground floor and breakout spaces for individual or group studying on the upper levels.
