Scotland Yard is a new headquarters building for the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in Whitehall. Combining a new public realm, glazed public room and rooftop pavilion with the refurbishment and extension of the existing Curtis Green building, the development creates a welcoming, open face for the organisation. The entrance forecourt extends the Ministry of Defence’s Whitehall Gardens, making a range of public spaces within a sculpted landscape. In conjunction with the new public room these new landscape interventions mediate between the MPS HQ and the street. A striped entrance mat that references the distinctive brickwork pattern of Norman Shaw’s ‘Old Scotland Yard’ is placed between the public room and the existing building to signify the organisation’s continuity and to indicate the point of entry. Above, a roof pavilion – providing multi-use space, meeting rooms and a terrace with sweeping River Thames views – completes the spatial mix. Glazed and lit internally at night, the subtle blue glow of the pavilion symbolises the 24/7 nature of the building as well as its civic purpose.
