The regeneration of the Riversport Complex in Oklahoma City focuses on enhancing the visitor experience through a series of strategic architectural improvements. By addressing fundamental site needs, the proposal transforms the venue into a more functional, accessible, and comfortable destination for both athletes and spectators.
Central to this transformation is the ‘Island Project’, which revitalises the underutilised mound between the competition and recreational whitewater channels. By terracing this land, the proposals create formalised spectator areas that offer views across the course and the downtown skyline. Sitting upon the plateau at the top of the terracing is a new multi-use pavilion, designed to resolve the site’s current lack of amenities; this cohesive building provides essential public facilities, including much-needed restrooms and food and drink concessions, alongside an On Venue Results facility to support official timing at sporting events.
Providing a dramatic focal point for the island is a large, diamond-shaped roof which sails elegantly over both the pavilion and the terraced seating, providing the vital shade required for visitor comfort while establishing a bold, recognisable silhouette in keeping with the existing venue. These improvements are supported by wider site enhancements, including a new pedestrian bridge that connects the island and creates a new route through the site. Combined with a comprehensive, intuitive signage strategy, these interventions work together to strengthen the venue’s identity and create a welcoming, well-connected environment.
