Located off North Western Avenue in Edmond, Oklahoma, Keystone Adventure School and Farm is an arts-based preschool and elementary school for children aged 3 – 11 on a 15-acre farm.
With a growing student population, the farmhouse that currently serves as the schoolhouse has become increasingly constrained by limited space. AHMM’s proposals, divided across two phases, holistically expands the school, helping them provide for the growing demand.
The project comprises a new one-story building adjacent to the farmhouse, providing six classrooms and a storm shelter. Constructed in two phases, the building gives each classroom direct access to the outdoors. Flexible classroom layouts, generous open spaces, and abundant natural light support both group and individual learning.
Clad in red brick, the building’s principal elevation continues the material character of the farmhouse while establishing a secure yet engaging boundary that meets its community through form, not fence.
The design responds to the overarching ethos of the school and its diverse student community. It provides an appropriate setting for a community where art, nature, life and learning are integrated. Simple in form and volume, the new building can be constructed from high-quality materials while reflecting the organization, scale, and material palette of the existing farmhouse and surrounding context
