North London Hospice

London. 2012

  • Project Details
  • Completion: 2012
  • Cost: £1.8 Million
  • Clients: North London Hospice

Designed to be ‘a big version of someone’s house’ to instil a domestic sense of well-being, North London Hospice offers specialist palliative care to patients with life-limiting illnesses. Set on a prominent corner in a quiet residential area of north London, the massing of this brick building is broken down into two north facing gables with circulation interleaved between. A single-storey multi-pitched extension at the rear completes the L-shaped plan and frames a south-facing private courtyard for the enjoyment of patients. Conceived from both the inside-out and the outside-in, the expansive windows set around a simple palette of brick and timber, ensure a series of light and airy spaces that are well-connected – both physically and visually – with their external environment.

North London Hospice at the Building Better Healthcare Awards

North London Hospice won the Grand Prix at 2013's Building Better Healthcare Awards today. About the building the judges said: "it is simple in that it is basically three materials – brick, white plaster and wood – but it is very impressive. This raises the bar and shows what can be done." The Completed Schemes winner for this year’s WAN Healthcare Awards is North London Hospice. Designed to be ‘a big version of someone’s house’ to instil a domestic sense of well-being, the building offers specialist palliative care to patients with life-limiting illnesses. As one judge commented: "This design addresses all of the concerns of a palliative care facility, in a very subtle way. The design provides a logical plan which aids in the delivery of care, as well as a palette of materials which convey a sense of ‘home’. A simple and elegant solution."

North London Hospice

Our North London Hospice project, which will offer specialist palliative care to patients with life limiting illnesses, is nearing completion in Enfield.

The North London Hospice charity which operates in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, provides emotional and practical support to patients and their families. The new building will provide local day care to those in the immediate area, avoiding the current need to travel to Finchley, as well as providing a base for the charity’s staff to extend their services and receive training.

The charity relies on donations to continue to treat their patients. If you would like to donate, please visit their website here.
