Located within Google’s new headquarters, YouTube Berlin is a cutting edge recording studio complex inside a historic building beside the River Spree. The listed 1880s former hospital has been transformed, adopting a dual approach of celebrating heritage and careful fit-out interventions. YouTube Berlin has its own dedicated double height entrance, accessed from the riverside path, and animated with a kinetic light installation by Berlin based Christopher Bauder. At the ground floor flexibility has been the key consideration, with a demand for hosting large events for YouTubers as well as accommodating smaller focus groups. The mobile reception desk and check-in kiosk can been wheeled to different pre-set locations, and an array of floor boxes and a high level rigging allow for unlimited location of cameras and stage lights so most areas can be used for filming. Facilities include a variety of studios, the largest of which doubles as a 4K screening room. There is a training room for up to 80 attendees, editing suites for post-production lectures and a facility for storing cameras, speakers and other state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment for creators to use. A suite of control rooms furnished with bespoke consoles uses large windows to offer glimpses of the latest technology, and promote visual connectedness. Creators can socialise in the adjacent Green Room after filming.
