Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus is a new campus for the University of Bristol adjacent to Bristol Temple Meads Station. As part of the masterplan AHMM has designed student accommodation on Temple Island for 953 postgraduates. The development wraps around a central courtyard, with taller elements rising up to the north. These elements act as a landmark for the University and the city, while also ensuring no overshadowing of the courtyard or neighbouring emerging developments. Primary access to the courtyard is via a grand entrance flanked by retail space. The base of the building is activated with the inclusion of commercial units and communal areas. A student hub acts as the heart of the development, providing safe environments for working and socialising. The hub contains a 24 hour reception and a variety of amenities including a gym, communal lounges, private workspace, and meeting rooms. Further student communal areas are located on the ninth floor where double-height garden rooms, a communal kitchen and games room occupy the ends of the two main blocks leading on to a roof terrace. The facade design has evolved from the cellular nature of student residential buildings and emphasises the verticality of the building. A considered approach has been taken to the selection of both colour and materiality. Powder coated aluminium panels in brick tones reference the city’s rich industrial heritage and reinforces the campus’ sense of place in Bristol.
