Egham Gateway is a new mixed use development in the Runnymede borough of Surrey. Four buildings combine new retail, leisure, residential and student accommodation, along with landscaping and public realm upgrades, to create a new gateway to the town centre. Buildings A and C have been designed to respond to the unique local context and create a unified commercial street that connects with the town’s historic high street. The blocks are lined with retail at ground level with access to a new boutique cinema and residential units above. Building B responds to the curve of the site, and has been designed to ensure active frontages to each elevation and provide further retail space at ground level and residential above. Building D provides new purpose-built student accommodation, along with communal study and social spaces. The development uses a design language that closely references the local vernacular. A highly articulated and varied roofscape combining pitched roofs, gables and dormer windows has been incorporated to reflect the character of the Conservation Area. A variety of brick colours, patterns and bonds are also used throughout the development in response to the wide variety visible in the local context. Brick quoining and diapering details are used in key locations to add visual interest to the facades.
