Google Berlin builds on Allford Hall Monaghan Morris’ previous work with Google in London, and is the practice’s first project outside the UK to be completed for the multinational technology company. The existing building was constructed as part of the women’s hospital in 1883 by Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden, before suffering serious damage during World War II. Part of the Forum an der Museumsinsel development, the building was extended by David Chipperfield in 2014 when the wider development was refurbished. AHMM’s approach to this now protected monument celebrates the character of the building whilst making it suitable for Google’s activities. The building is transformed through a series of interventions carefully inserted to improve flow and activate the spaces around them. Recent finishes are stripped back to show original features and materials, celebrating the building’s history, revealing its unique character and creating a canvas for new insertions.
