Work begins on site at Tower Hamlets Town Hall

Construction work has begun on site at Tower Hamlets Town Hall, which transforms the Grade II listed former Royal London Hospital into a new publicly accessible town hall housing a new council chamber, library, café and public facilities. Initial works on site had involved removing the old NHS fit-out and large amounts of asbestos. The groundbreaking was marked with a ceremony in which John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, sealed a time capsule within the walls of the building. The small metal cylinder contained a letter from the mayor along with letters from local schoolchildren and photos of the original hospital building.
