Two AHMM projects shortlisted for a 2026 British Construction & Infrastructure Award 03.07.26

1 Broadgate and Angel Square have both been shortlisted for a British Construction & Infrastructure (BCI) Award. Returning for their 39th year, these awards celebrate and honour the outstanding contributions of the British construction industry, recognising and rewarding excellence in project delivery. These awards celebrate the hard work and dedication of the whole project team – from clients, architects, designers and contractors.

1 Broadgate, shortlisted for the Architectural Design Excellence Award, is the penultimate project in the transformation of Broadgate from a fortress like office campus into a mixed use, seven-day Central London destination. The building provides flexible accommodation for a mix of uses including twelve storeys of flexible office space above two levels of retail space.

A key design principle was to improve the ground plane, connecting pedestrian routes from all directions. The massing and articulation help to minimise the perceived scale of the building, particularly when viewed from street level. At upper levels massing sculpted to maintain sunlight to Broadgate’s key public spaces, while lower-level volumes pull apart to create entrances and retail arcades through the building.

The colours of the elevations are taken from the earthy and autumnal colours of the surrounding buildings; the metal fins are coloured to express the building’s stacked volumes, gradually darkening from the base to the top.

Angel Square, shortlisted for Commercial Property of the Year, is a mixed-use, office-led redevelopment at the gateway to Angel, Islington, reimagining a constrained 1980s building through a strategy of structural reuse, environmental upgrade and public realm repair. Built directly over Angel Underground Station, the scheme retains c.80% of the original concrete frame, basement and foundations to transform a previously inward-looking site into a permeable and engaged piece of city.

The new landmark building provides c.188,800 square feet of modern office space above a permeable ground floor featuring a grand lobby and café, public house and new public throughfare linking Islington High Street to Torrens Street.

The internal structure informed the rhythm of the façade design which is comprised of articulated GRC columns and ledges, profiled metal spandrel panels with tonal variation tied to the surrounding context, a flared ‘butterfly’ roof storey and glazed terracotta elements at ground floor.

Winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony on the 14th of October.
