Three AHMM projects shortlisted for a New London Architecture Award 19.08.26

Mason & Fifth Westbourne Park, Angel Square and Metropolis have been shortlisted for a New London Architecture (NLA) Award. Supported by the Mayor of London, the NLA Awards celebrate schemes that shape a better London and contribute to a city of Equity, Sustainability and Prosperity.

Mason & Fifth Westbourne Park, shortlisted in the Retail & Hospital Built category, is a mixed-use development that transforms a former brownfield site into a waterfront destination on the Grand Union Canal, designed to draw young creative, entrepreneurs and professionals to West London. Designed by AHMM with interiors by TiggColl, the scheme is a family of buildings around an urban courtyard opening to the canal. A 332-key flexible living building anchors the development, with social and work lounges, communal dining, a listening lounge, screening room and wellness suite (pool, gym and movement studio). Community-facing uses include co-working, affordable workspaces, a waterfront restaurant and public-realm upgrades.

Angel Square, shortlisted in the Office Built category, is a mixed-use, office-led redevelopment at the gateway to Angel, Islington, reimagining a constrained 1980s building through a strategy of structural reuse, environmental upgrade and public realm repair. Built directly over Angel Underground Station, the scheme retains c.80% of the original concrete frame, basement and foundations to transform a previously inward-looking site into a permeable and engaged piece of city. The new landmark building provides c.188,800 square feet of modern office space above a permeable ground floor featuring a grand lobby and café, public house and new public throughfare linking Islington High Street to Torrens Street.

Metropolis, shortlisted in the Retrofit Built category, reimagines a landmark building within the historic grain of Marylebone, London exemplifying best practice in high-performance, adaptive reuse and wellbeing-led workplace development. Originally commissioned by Woolworths in 1955, and designed by renowned architect Richard Seifert & Partners, the scheme transforms the mid-century landmark into a 175,000 square foot, low carbon commercial hub, bringing the existing structure in line with the needs of contemporary office occupiers. The existing building has been extended with a seven-storey stepped extension to the rear, built using cross-laminated timber (CLT). Clad in glazed terracotta, the extension increases the building’s internal floor area by 40% and creates opportunities for staggered landscape terraces, providing generous green space for tenants.
