On Thursday, 26 June, 76 Southbank and Tower Hamlets Town Hall both received Schüco Excellence Awards, in the Major Project and Health, Culture and Leisure categories respectively, with 76 Southbank being named overall winner.
Designed by Sir Denys Lasdun and completed in 1983, 76 Southbank started life as the office and client marketing building for IBM. Although the building was listed at Grade II in 2020 it did not meet modern standards and presented an opportunity for sensitive improvements. AHMM has carefully refurbished and extended the building to deliver an additional 11,000 square metres of flexible and highly sustainable office space. The scheme has preserved this important building for the long-term future while greatly improving and enhancing its setting within the South Bank conservation area.
Tower Hamlets Town Hall, the new headquarters for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, encompasses the restoration of the Grade II listed former Royal London Hospital building, and the addition of a new build extension. The move to the former hospital site consolidates a number of the council’s offices into one location and offers a broad range of public services to the borough’s residents, in a more accessible location in Whitechapel. The design responds to key eras of the existing building’s development, between 1757 and 1906, utilising the architectural character inherent in each extension to enrich the new internal environment.
Organised in association with Architecture Today, the Schüco Excellence Awards champion the design and delivery of exemplary facades, focusing on criteria of creativity, innovation, technical skills and creative collaboration.
