JOHNSON BUILDING

Johnson Building
  • Completion: 2006
  • Cost: £27 million
  • Client: Derwent London Plc.
  • Awards:
  • RIBA National Award for Architecture 2008
The refurbishment of an existing Hatton Garden building coupled with the construction of a new six storey building linked by an atrium with a roof of ETFE pillows. There is 185,000 sq ft of office space with an annex containing 14 flats and jewellery workshops. Untypically the developers envisaged multiple tenancy and had leased all the space within 6 months completion. Following client-funded research the interiors are cool; very high quality concrete and natural materials. The new-build element is faced in glazed bricks in the traditional manner of City courtyards - but black not white.
