North Croydon Medical Centre is an exercise in how a modernist formal language of planes, volumes and strong colours might occupy a prominent suburban corner site. A three-storey building, organised in two strips running perpendicular to the narrow site’s front edge, are buffered from the busy road by a triple-height void that connects the waiting room to the sky. A singular circulation and services zone running parallel to the party wall allows the consultation rooms, offices and the waiting area to benefit from views and light. The exterior – a careful composition towards the front and a repeating treatment along the side – recalls London theatres with their eventful frontages and plain flanks.
