Cobalt Place, for Lend Lease, is an enabling development to cross-fund a new school building. As part of the masterplan for the former Salesian College site in Battersea, which includes the new Saint John Bosco College and a Community House for the Salesians of Don Bosco, this residential scheme comprises 102 apartments split across two 5-6 storey buildings and 2 separate townhouses. The brick-faced buildings – located at the western edge of the site – are arranged to form a residential quarter with a central court space that opens up new views to the neighbouring Sacred Heart church. This community amenity space combines with the other open spaces distributed across the entire site to increase visual and physical permeability. Externally, each storey is expressed with stack bond banding to add both a finer grain and improved legibility to the elevations. Internally, communal areas are defined by expanses of exposed fair-faced CLT, the buildings' structure. Chosen for its sound structural properties, construction efficiency and low environmental impact, the CLT structure is one part of a wider sustainability agenda; a fact further revealed by how the apartments and townhouses were built to CfSH levels 4 and 5 respectively.
